The badges range from simple cotton woven shoulder straps and distinguishing badges of arms to valuable 19th century epaulettes and officers boxes to the current Army XXI tunit badges.

By building a stringently structured collection, the badges are physically secured, indexed and documented in a enduring manner. The first priority is to build sub-collections in the various categories, select the appropriate objects, record and inventory them. The core collection holdings are to be quickly compiled so that necessary comparisons and additions can be made.

The collection, in conjunction with existing documentary materials, will provide valuable information for military history research. It already includes several thousand individual objects from the period from 1840 to the present day.
